Rebels Program Information

The Rebels Lacrosse Club participates in the Jersey Girl Lacrosse Association (JGLA). It is made up of girls residing in Berkeley Heights, Mountainside and New Providence.  Beginners are welcome and coaches are flexible with other sport schedules however Lacrosse should take priority in the spring!

Mission:  No experience is required!  The purpose of the program is to introduce young girls to the fundamentals of Lacrosse. We recognize and appreciate the enormous benefits of athletics for young girls. We tailor the instruction based on individual ability because everyone is unique and progresses at a different pace. Our program will promote self-confidence; develop important life skills and provide a competitive environment that will stress individual and team improvement, good sportsmanship and a life long healthy lifestyle.

Eligibility:  Girls in grades grades 1 through 8 who reside in the towns of Berkeley Heights, Mountainside and New Providence are eligible to participate.

Introductory Level:  This is an introduction into the game of lacrosse for 1/2 grade level. Players will be taught stick skills, 1v1 defense, team defense, 1v1 offensive skills and team offense. There will also be intra-squad scrimmages to allow players to apply the skills they have learned and have fun.  Every effort will be made to schedule practices Saturday mornings or afternoons. The scheduling of make-ups will depend on field availability in Berkeley Heights and New Providence. Please be flexible!

Travel Teams:  Travel teams will be formed at single or multiple grade levels after the girls have participated in a sufficient number of practices allowing coaches to put together teams of equal strength.  Every effort will be made to schedule travel games on Monday Evenings, Wednesday evenings, Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings and afternoons. The scheduling of make-ups will depend on field and opponent availability and may or may not be on these days. Fields in Berkeley Heights and New Providence (as well as AWAY team locations) are subject to numerous demands.  Please be flexible!

The JGLA encourages equal playing time but this will be driven by practice attendance, promptness to practice/games, and commitment to improvement. Skill level is the least important consideration in determining the amount of playing time.

Select Teams:  The JGLA has allowed for the creation of single or multiple grade level select teams to provide the stronger players with a more challenging venue.  Placement on these teams is by invitation only after the girls have participated in a sufficient number of practices.  Girls at the 5/6 grade level invited to participate in “select” games will also play on the “travel” team.  At the 5/6 grade level, games will be played on weeknights and Saturdays during the day.  At the 7/8 grade level, games will be played on Friday evening, Saturday evenings and Sundays during the day.  The “select” game schedule will not conflict with the “travel” game schedule.

Player Evaluation:  Other sport programs typically evaluate players for a 2 hour period and place on a team. The Rebels Lacrosse Club evaluates players for at least two weeks before placing on a travel and/or select team. As our season progresses, players who were not invited to play at the select level may be given an opportunity to play select.

Spring Soccer: We recognize that many girls play spring soccer. The Rebels Lacrosse Club has moved Saturday practices to after 12 pm and avoids scheduling games on Sunday's to prevent conflicts as much as possible. Since lacrosse is a spring session sport, our expectation is that a lacrosse game takes priority over a spring soccer game. The spring lacrosse schedule will be formed by February 1 and times confirmed by March 1 which will provide plenty of advance notice to your soccer coach.
